Divyanshi Wadhwa supports the research of Vijaya Ramachandran and Matt Collin on the unintended consequences of anti-money laundering laws on development. Before joining CGD, she worked as a consultant with The World Bank analyzing the impact of a number of randomised controlled trials held in secondary schools of Uganda. Wadhwa has also worked on issues related to gender socialisation and adolescent health in India. She holds a master of public policy from Georgetown University and a B.A. in political science from Delhi University.

Post demonetisation: Is digital finance in India’s future?

Analysing RBI data from June 2017 – six months after demonetisation was announced on 9 November 2016 – Mukherjee and Wadhwa show that reliance on cash has reverted to pre-demonetisation levels, and the sharp increases in digital transactions did not sustain. While consumers don’t seem ready to give up cash just yet, the experience proves that the digital financial ecosystem of India is in good health.
