Madhulika Khanna

Madhulika Khanna is a doctoral candidate at Georgetown University with a planned graduation date of May 2020. Her primary research interests are in development economics, health economics, and the economics of education. The common thread that runs across her work is an exploration of gendered deprivations and the efficacy of directed policy innovations in improving the well-being of women. Her latest research shows that reaching menarche before age twelve leads to a substantial decrease in school enrolment in India. In another co-authored project, she studies the effect of the flooding of river Kosi in Bihar – one of the poorest regions in the world – on local marriage markets. Additional work with the World Bank evaluates an incentive-based financing intervention designed to improve health delivery in Nigeria. Before her Ph.D., she worked with the Social Observatory, an interdisciplinary team of researchers at the World Bank's Development Research Group, and provided technical assistance for livelihood projects in India.
