Tara Kaul

Tara Kaul is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Economics at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her areas of interest are development economics and public economics. Her current research focuses on the nutritional impact of food subsidies, and intra-household gender discrimination in educational expenditures in India.

Tara holds a B.A. (Hons.) in Economics from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University, and an M.A. in Economics from Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University. http://econweb.umd.edu/~kaul/

Estimating the nutritional impact of the Food Security Bill

The provisions of the new National Food Security Bill seek to expand the value and reach of food subsidies provided through the Public Distribution System. This column analyses the nutritional impact of the PDS, and provides an estimate of the impact of the Bill on the caloric intake of current beneficiaries of the programme.
