Ujjayant Chakravorty

Ujjayant Chakravorty is Professor of Economics at Tufts University and Fellow at the Toulouse School of Economics and CESifo. He is co-editor of the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management. His current research involves the economics of fossil fuels and clean energy, the effect of US biofuel policy on food prices and poverty, and the organisation of groundwater markets in China and India. He has received research funding from NSF, NOAA, SSHRC and other agencies and has published in major journals such as the Journal of Political Economy, American Economic Review, Econometrica and the Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control. He is co-editor of the book “India and Global Climate Change” published by Oxford University Press. Chakravorty has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from IIT Delhi and a Ph.D. in Resource and Environmental Economics from the University of Hawaii/East-West Center.

Does the quality of electricity matter?

India is home to almost a quarter of the world population that does not have access to electricity. This column estimates the impact of increased access to and improved quality of electricity on incomes in rural India. It suggests that merely providing grid connections does not enable full realisation of the potential benefits of electricity; high quality power supply is at least as important.
