This project brings experimental and quasi-experimental research methods to bear on important issues confronting rural electrification initiatives. The overarching objective is to investigate how modular smart grid technology can be used to improve both supply- and demand-side efficiency in rural settings. Specifically, it investigates the extent to which provision of real-time information about energy consumption fosters household-level improvements in consumption efficiency, and how smart grid technology can be used to detect and mitigate technical and non-technical energy losses in rural settings.
