Madhu is an experienced public policy professional with close to a decade of experience in the financial sector, of which five years is in financial sector policy. He is currently a Senior Research Associate at Dvara Research under the Financial Systems Design Initiative. His main areas of expertise are banking regulation, consumer protection, and financial inclusion. As part of his work on banking system design, he worked on stress-testing methodologies, credit-guarantee schemes, and competition in the Indian banking sector. His research also includes a study reimagining the banking business model, in which a bank only aggregates credit risk and highlights the regulatory, institutional, and infrastructural changes required to enable the development of such banks. On the consumer protection side, his research focusses on using ex-ante regulatory measures for consumer protection. He recently co-authored an empirical paper that analyses the impact of information disclosure on consumer behaviour. He has also provided research support and policy inputs to many regulatory committees setup by Reserve Bank of India and Securities and Exchange Board of India. In addition to his research and policy work, he also writes on issues pertaining to the Indian banking sector in leading financial dailies like Bloomberg Quint, Mint and, Moneycontrol.
He has completed his postgraduate studies from the Institute for Financial Management and Research, and is a certified Financial Risk Management professional by GARP.
