Amita Majumder

Amita Majumder is former Professor, Economic Research Unit, Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata. Currently she is guest faculty at ISI, Kolkata. She received her Ph.D., Masters in Statistics, and Bachelor in Statistics from ISI, Kolkata. Her broad areas of interest are analysis of consumer/household behaviour, index numbers, welfare and poverty analysis, and gender issues. She has been published in a number of highly ranked journals including International Economic Review, Economics Letters, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Applied Econometrics, Empirical Economics and Journal of Applied Statistics.

Goods and services tax: Estimating optimal rates
Introduced in India in 2017, a key feature of the goods and services tax (GST) system is that the tax rate for a particular commodity is uniform across the country. Based on a counterfactual framework that incorporates regional diversity in prices and spending to estimate optimal commodity tax rates, this article argues for a departure from this universal GST practice in India.
