Anusuya Sivaram
Anusuya Sivaram graduated from Georgetown University in 2012 with a BSFS in International Economics. During her undergraduate studies, Anusuya worked as a microeconomics teaching assistant at Georgetown, and as a research assistant for the World Bank’s Development Economics Research Group, and its Gender & Poverty Research Group. Since 2012, Anusuya has worked for both JPAL South Asia and the Center for Microfinance at IFMR as a research associate on randomised evaluations of microfinance and voter choice. Her research interests revolve around behavioural economics and reproductive health, as well as broader issues of choice under uncertainty. Anusuya is currently working in Telangana on an intervention to improve adolescent girls' knowledge of fertility and contraception.

How effective is Janani Suraksha Yojana?
Janani Suraksha Yojana - India’s safe motherhood programme – provides poor women with a financial incentive for delivering births at health centres and seeking antenatal and postnatal care. This column finds that the programme has had limited success. While women with no formal education and those from rural areas have benefitted disproportionately, the programme has failed to reach the poorest women.
