Apoorv Gupta

Apoorv Gupta is Assistant Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College. His research interests are productivity, economic growth and development. His recent work has focussed on understanding the role of income inequality in accounting for productivity differences among firms in India, documenting how major policy changes can drive the adoption of financial technology among small retailers, and how expanding mobile technology can increase productivity of farmers in developing countries. Apoorv joined Dartmouth after receiving his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 2020.

सूचना प्रौद्योगिकी को अपनाना तथा उत्पादकता: भारतीय कृषि में मोबाइल फोन की भूमिका

2000 के दशक के मध्‍य और उत्तरार्ध के दौरान भारत ने ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों में मोबाइल फोन कवरेज का विस्तार किया और कृषि संबंधी सलाह लेने वाले किसानों के लिए निशुल्क कॉल सेंटर सेवाओं की शुरुआत की। इस लेख से ज्ञात होता है कि इन कार्यक्रमों ने कृषि क्षेत्र में अधिक उन्नत प्रौद्योगिकियों को अपनाने और उत्पादकता बढ़ाने में मदद की। हालांकि ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि कृषि सलाह की पहुंच में भाषा संबंधी बाधाओं ने अलग-अलग क्षेत्रों में किसानों के बीच असमानता को बढ़ाया है।

Information technology adoption and productivity: Role of mobile phones in Indian agriculture

During mid to late 2000s, India expanded mobile phone coverage across rural areas and introduced free-of-charge call centre services for farmers seeking agricultural advice. This article shows that these programmes helped increase the take-up of more advanced technologies and raised productivity of the agricultural sector. However, language barriers in the access of agricultural advice appear to increase disparities among farmers in different areas.
