Arup Mitra
Dr Arup Mitra is Professor of Economics at the Institute of Economic Growth (IEG), Delhi. He was Professor and Dean at South Asian University, and the Director General of National Institute of Labour Economics Research and Development (NILERD). His research interests includes development economics, urban issues, labour and welfare, corruption, industrial growth and productivity, services sector, and gender inequality. He was awarded by the Indian Econometric Society with the Mahalanobis Memorial Gold Medal for his outstanding contribution to quantitative economics. His book on Inclusive Growth, Employment and Wellbeing published by Springer received the Professor S. R. Sen ‘Best Book Award’, 2019. His recent book Urban Headway and Upward Mobility (2020) has been published by Cambridge University Press.

How many jobs were lost in urban India during lockdown?
The nationwide lockdown imposed in March 2020 to contain the spread of Covid-19, disrupted economic activity – particularly in urban India. Using data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey for the period April-June 2020, Mitra and Singh examine job losses in urban areas. They find that the secondary and tertiary sectors were more adversely affected than agriculture, and more women than men dropped out of the labour force.
