Ashish Singh
Ashish is an Assistant Professor at the Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. He completed his Ph.D. from the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai, India in 2012. His research and teaching interests include economics of discrimination, distribution, social exclusion and underdevelopment. He also works in the areas of intergenerational mobility, public health and demography. He has published research papers in leading journals including Review of Income and Wealth, Oxford Development Studies, European Journal of Development Research, Social Indicators Research, Journal of Poverty, Journal of Population Ageing, Population Research and Policy Review, PLoS One, Maternal and Child Health Journal, BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth, Economic and Political Weekly, among others.

Increasing economic divide within backward castes
While the high level of socioeconomic inequality between the forward and backward caste groups in India is well documented, there is little research on inequalities within the backward caste groups. This column finds that economic divide within Scheduled Castes and within Scheduled Tribes has been on the rise over the past three decades.
