Belmati Jonko

Belmati Jonko is a Prime Minister’s Rural Development Fellow (PMRDF) under the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) working in Khunti, Jharkhand. Her primary area of focus is National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM); initiating livelihood opportunities for lac farmers by organising them into cooperatives; Model villages (state-sponsored scheme); MNREGA; and RANIA and BIRBANKI Action Plan.

She has done her graduation with B.Sc. in Biotechnology from Boston College for Professional Studies, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh and her MBA in Rural Management from KIIT School of Rural Management, Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

Empowering women for development

In conversation with a Prime Minister’s Rural Development Fellow, Bahrin Bhuyinya, a resident of the Khunti district in Jharkhand shares her story. While she feels that the village has significantly benefitted from government schemes in the past decade, it is the increased involvement of women in the village panchayat that has truly empowered Bahrin and others like her. This is the second narrative in our three part series on what development means to women in some of the most remote parts of the country.
