C. Veeramani

Veeramani is a Professor at Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), Mumbai. He holds a Ph.D. and M.Phil. in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. He was a Visiting Fellow at Crawford School of Public Policy, Australian National University. Prior to joining IGIDR, he worked with Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), New Delhi, and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay. He is the recipient of EXIM Bank International Economic Development Research Award 2003 for the best doctoral dissertation in international economics. He is the Joint Managing Editor of Journal of Quantitative Economics, and Economics Area Editor of Journal of Indian Business Research. His recent research papers deal with issues such as exports and jobs, trade in value added, India’s export performance, industrial productivity, global production networks/value chains, free trade agreements, international trade and labour market outcomes, and foreign direct investment.

Exports, global production sharing, and job creation in India

Is it in the interest of a country to promote strong local linkages for its domestic industries or to participate in global production sharing activities wherein linkages are globally dispersed? This article informs this debate by empirically analysing which one of these strategies would result in higher levels of domestic value added and employment in a developing country like India.
