Chandana Maitra
Dr Chandana Maitra is currently teaching at the School of Economics, University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. She received her doctoral degree from the School of Economics, University of Queensland in 2013. She is an applied development economist with substantial knowledge in the areas of food security and maternal, neonatal and child health. She has considerable expertise in survey-based research. Research interests include development economics, health economics, micro-econometrics and the Chinese economy. Teaching interests include microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics, development economics, international trade theory and the Chinese economy.

Can microcredit improve food security among the rural poor?
A core objective of microcredit in Bangladesh is to make the rural poor more food secure. To what extent has this been achieved? Analysing household data from Bangladesh, this column finds that participants of microcredit programmes are more food secure, with improved calorie availability, reduced child stunting and better maternal nutritional status. However, programme participation in itself does not improve dietary diversity.
