Charles R. Hankla

Charles R. Hankla is Associate Professor of Political Science at Georgia State University, Director of Governance Programs at the Andrew Young School’s International Center for Public Policy, and an affiliate of the GSU Asian Studies Center. He is a graduate of Emory University, Georgetown University, and the London School of Economics.

Charles’s research is in the fields of comparative and international political economy, with a particular focus on political institutions as they relate to fiscal decentralisation, budgeting, and trade and industrial policy. His research projects have included cross-national, quantitative studies, and also fieldwork-based analyses of India, Mozambique, and France.

Charles is the co-author of Local Accountability and National Coordination in Fiscal Federalism: A Fine Balance, and his articles have appeared in such outlets as the American Political Science Review, Comparative Political Studies, and the Comparative Politics. He is also an active consultant, having worked with the US State Department, USAID, the UNDP, and the G20 process. Charles is also a regular commentator on the politics of international economic affairs.
