Daniel Bennett

Daniel Bennett is Assistant Professor (Research) of Economics at the Center for Economic and Social Research and Department of Economics, University of Southern California (USC). He is an applied microeconomist who studies economic development and global health. His research examines the impact of information on health behaviour and the operation of healthcare markets. He also studies the interaction between poverty and mental health. Prof. Bennett has led or participated in several randomised field experiments in South Asia. He received his Ph.D. in 2008 from Brown University and served on the faculty of the University of Chicago for eight years before joining USC.

The impact of community-based depression treatment in India
Although the prevalence of depression may have adverse economic impacts, especially in developing countries, treatment options in India are limited by a shortage of providers. This article looks at the impact of providing community-based depression treatment to low-income adults, and finds that it improves mental health and schooling outcomes for older children, and reduces risk tolerance. Additionally, pairing pharmacotherapy with livelihoods assistance provides additional benefits at a low additional cost.
