Emily Dansereau

Emily Dansereau is a Post Bachelor Fellow at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, and an M.P.H. candidate at the University of Washington. Her research interests lie in health systems, with a focus on costs, access and inequalities. In particular, she is interested in the intersection of supply and demand side barriers to quality care. She previously worked implementing public health programmes in Haiti, and holds a B.A. from Stanford University.

Distance and institutional deliveries in rural India

India has the highest rate of maternal deaths in the world. A major cause is that a significant proportion of women continue to deliver babies at home without the presence of a skilled attendant. This column says that distance to health facilities is a key barrier to seeking delivery care at a facility.
