Gitanjali Sen

Gitanjali Sen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the Shiv Nadar University (SNU), Gautam Buddh Nagar, with interests in applied micro-development economics areas. A Ph.D. in economics from the University of Missouri – Columbia, her research interests include policies for inclusive development through access to education, health and finance, with interconnections among developmental outcomes of public policy relevance. Her interests in impact evaluations of social sector policies led to studying existing affirmation action policies in Indian higher education system, measuring the impacts of different health related interventions and conditional cash transfer programmes. Prior to joining the SNU in 2013, some of her earlier assignments included serving as the faculty of economics at the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), Hyderabad (2011-12), Fellow at the Observer Research Foundation, New Delhi (2007-11), a Lead Economist at the Comat Technologies, Bangalore (2005-07), and member of faculty at the Jain Group of Institutions, Bangalore (2004-05). She has also been a faculty member in the Department of Economics at SRM University in 2018-19.

Sustained health benefits of ICDS: Later life evidence

Child malnutrition is a serious concern for India where more than half of the children under age five are moderately or severely malnourished. The Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) launched in 1975, target long-term nutrition and holistic development of children. Analysing data from the India Human Development Survey-II, this article evaluates the causal impact of ICDS exposure in rural areas on children’s health outcomes in later years of their lives.
