Jan Priebe

Jan Priebe is currently the Quantitative Lead Researcher with the PSF Analytics Team at the World Bank in Jakarta. Jan Priebe was born in Rostock (Germany) in 1980. He studied Economics at the University of Göttingen, Universidad Torcuato di Tella in Buenos Aires and the University of California, Irvine. In 2011 he obtained a Ph.D. in Development Economics from the University of Göttingen. Since 2012, Jan Priebe works for Indonesia’s Vice President Office and the World Bank on the implementation on and implementation of various social protection programmes in the country. Over the last 10 years, Jan Priebe has worked for multiple development agencies such as BMZ, DFID, GIZ, KfW, and UNICEF in various countries in Africa and Asia.

Can the female sarpanch deliver? Evidence from Maharashtra

One-third of all seats in village councils are reserved for women. The government has proposed an increase in quota to 50%, and in the period of reservation from five to 10 years. Based on a survey conducted in Maharashtra, this column finds that availability of basic public services for women is better in female-headed villages - when the female head has been in the job for 3-3.5 years.
