K. Subbaraje Urs is an Associate Fellow at the National Council of Applies Economic Research (NCAER), with more than 24 years of experience in applied economic research, socioeconomic, and industrial research. His core areas of research are large-scale surveys, particularly in developing survey instruments, calculating the sample size, and identifying gaps in primary and secondary data. He has worked on both large-scale household and industrial surveys with NCAER. He has been associated with several projects including the study on Integrated Child Development Services, Rural Economic and Demographic Survey, non-conventional energy sources programme, Business Expectations Survey (BES) and Market Information Survey of Households (MISH).

Business sentiments and labour markets

The Covid-19 pandemic and associated lockdowns have had a significant adverse impact on jobs and livelihoods. Using 2006-2021 data from a survey on business sentiments, this article examines fluctuations in firms’ hiring of temporary/casual and permanent workers across three major economic events – the Global Financial Crisis, demonetisation, and the Covid-19 crisis. It shows that firms use temporary workers to adjust to changes in the demand of their products in response to macroeconomic uncertainty – increasing vulnerability among workers.
