Lakhwinder Singh
Lakhwinder Singh is a Visiting Professor at the Institute for Human Development (IHD), New Delhi. Prior to this, he has been Professor and Head of the Department of Economics at Punjabi University, Patiala, where he has founded Centre for Development Economics and Innovation Studies (CDEIS). He is the founding Editor of Millennial Asia: An International Journal of Asian Studies published by SAGE.
He has held several visiting positions, including at Yale University and Seoul National University, South Korea, and has teaching experience of more than 32 years. His specialisations are development economics, innovation systems, regional economics, area studies and the economy of Punjab.

Economic development of Punjab: Prospects and policies
While the north Indian state of Punjab topped per-capita income rankings within the country until year 2000, its position fell consistently thereafter. This article discusses the current state of Punjab’s economy – in terms of agriculture, manufacturing and services; jobs and education; and public finance and governance – and the reasons for the challenges faced by the state. Further, they consider prospects for growth and enabling policies.
