Mariappa Kullappa

Mariappa Kullappa is a Senior Water and Sanitation Specialist with the World Bank Water Global Practice. He has been working in the water and sanitation sector for more than two decades. Kullappa has worked on a range of issues re water and sanitation in rural and urban areas. He has worked with bilateral agencies like DANIDA (The Danish International Development Agency), Royal Netherlands Assistance, and with private sector and academic institutions. He is currently working on the Government of India's flagship programme Swachh Bharat Mission - Gramin (SBM- G) and other Bank supported water and sanitation projects in India.

Building institutional capacity for rural sanitation in Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state with about 200 million people, has historically not performed well on sanitation. In this article, Mariappa Kullappa of the World Bank Water Global Practice gives an account of the state administration’s experience of pushing ahead its sanitation agenda successfully in a few districts, and generating learning and confidence for wider replication.
