Mario Negre

Mario Negre is a senior economist in the World Bank's Development Research Group seconded by the German Development Institute. He has worked at the European Parliament, first as an adviser to the chairman of the Development Committee and then for all external relations committees. Since 2012, he has been a senior researcher at the German Development Institute. His fields of specialisation are pro-poor growth, inclusiveness, inequality and poverty measurement, as well as development cooperation policy, particularly European. Mario holds a B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Barcelona, an M.A. in Development Policies from the University of Bremen, and a Ph.D. in Development Economics from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, India.

While inequality has received a great deal of attention in the public debate in recent times, the poor quality of data available on this issue is a constraint. Based on a recently-compiled database of the World Bank, this column presents the trend for within-country inequality for the average country.
