Mridusmita Bordoloi

Mridusmita Bordoloi is an Associate Fellow with the Accountability Initiative team at the Centre for Policy Research (CPR), Delhi. She has 19 years of research experience in the areas of education, labour market, child protection and consumer economy in India. Her recent work involves tracking public finances, government processes, regulations and outcomes in ‘school education’ and ‘child protection’ sectors, including analysis of multiple centrally-sponsored schemes implemented by the Union Government of India. Her research also includes issues related to social protection for unorganised sector workers and India’s overall labour market challenges. Her work in the past involved understanding income and consumption expenditure patterns of the household in India, by exploring both macro-economic trends as well as evidence from primary surveys.

Challenges in access to secondary education in India

India’s latest National Education Policy has envisaged universal access to education by 2030. However, while enrolment is high in elementary schools, access to and uptake of secondary education has remained low. Bordoloi and Pandey consider some contributing factors, including the limited number of schools offering secondary education, the higher costs associated with schooling, and the lack of public investment in education and vocational training. They call for increased attention to be paid to policy focussed on secondary education.
