MS Sriram

Professor Sriram is Faculty at the Centre for Public Policy, IIM Bangalore and a Visiting Professor at IIM Udaipur. He is also a Distinguished Fellow of Institute for Development of Research in Banking Technology – set up by RBI. In the past he was the ICICI Bank Lalita Gupte Chair Professor of Microfinance, and Chairperson Finance and Accounting Area at IIM Ahmedabad; on the faculty of IRMA, and Vice President of Basix. He has also taught at the Solvay Brussels School of Business and Economics.

Sriram is a co-author of three Books - Beyond Micro-credit, published by Sage-Vistaar, and two books on Flow of Credit to Small and Marginal Farmers.

Sriram has served on several committees set up by the Government of India, RBI and NABARD. He is currently on the board of NABFINS, NDDB Dairy Services and Centre for Budget and Policy Studies, and a Trustee of Pratham Books and Dastkar Andhra.

The financial inclusion agenda and Aadhaar

The central government is pushing financial inclusion in a big way. In this article, MS Sriram discusses the role of identity in financial inclusion, and the importance of Aadhaar in this context. He argues that while Aadhaar has facilitated opening of bank accounts by providing a verifiable identity to the poor, it has distracted the financial inclusion agenda by claiming to be a ‘fix-all’ solution.
