N. R. Bhanumurthy

Dr N.R. Bhanumurthy is currently working as Professor at National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP), New Delhi. Prior to this he worked as Associate Professor at Institute of Economic Growth (IEG), Delhi. He has served on eleven government committees constituted by Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Statistics, National Statistical Commission, and erstwhile Planning Commission of India. He has been the Secretary of the Indian Econometric Society since 2006 and also Managing Trustee of Indian Economic Association Trust for Research and Development since 2010. He has been awarded Mahalanobis Memorial Medal (National) Award (2014) by The Indian Econometric Society (TIES) for his outstanding contributions to the field of quantitative economics in India; and Prof. VKRV Rao Award for Social Sciences (economics) 2015 from ICSSR (Indian Council of Social Science Research) and ISEC (Institute for Social and Economic Change), Bengaluru.

His research areas include macro-monetary economics, fiscal policy, international money and finance, macroeconomic modeling, and development economics. He has authored nearly 70 research papers and five books.

How governance and public expenditure impact human development

The state of Madhya Pradesh displays wide variance in human development outcomes across its districts. This article examines the link between public expenditure, quality of governance, and human development in the state. It finds that development expenditure by itself is insufficient in achieving human development; public expenditure has better outcomes in districts with better governance indicators.
