Natalie Boyd Williams is a PhD student conducting research on the geography of renewable energy transitions. Her focus has been on domestic biogas digesters connected to household toilets as a renewable energy and rural sustainability technology. Through her investigations, she explores the impact of various multi-scalar factors on household transitions to domestic biogas, ranging from political and regulatory environments to socio-cultural norms at the local level. Natalie’s research aims to deepen understanding of the complex dynamics surrounding renewable energy adoption at the household level

Overcoming socio-cultural resistance towards biogas technology

Cultural taboos are often described as an insurmountable barrier to adoption of domestic toilet-linked anaerobic digesters (TLADs). This study provides a better understanding of the socio-cultural resistance towards TLADs through findings from interviews with households in Assam, and demonstrates that this resistance can be negotiable in certain circumstances. It highlights various pathways to adoption of TLADs and suggests ways in which the implementation of the national biogas programmes could become more effective.
