Parul Jain is an Indian Economic Service Officer, currently posted as Assistant Director in the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India. She holds an MSc in Economics for Development from University of Oxford, where she empirically explored the long term impact of the Green Revolution on poverty, unemployment and migration in India. Aside from this, she has a keen interest in trade and agriculture, e-commerce and development economics. She regularly publishes opinion pieces on how to boost growth in the agriculture sector, and co-founded an e-commerce company and has considerable experience in that domain.

Long-run impacts of tube well irrigation in India

Increasing agricultural productivity may significantly and positively impact welfare, income and the pace of structural transformation. Using India’s Green Revolution and the corresponding self-sufficiency in food production as a natural experiment, this article discusses the long-run impacts of the productivity increase. Using an instrumental variable approach, it shows how tube well expansion since the mid-1960s led to a decrease in employment in the farming sector, and had a positive impact on living conditions and asset ownership.
