Prathap Kasina leads Innovations for Poverty Action's (IPA) Asia and Latin America portfolio that includes Bangladesh, Myanmar, the Philippines, Peru, and Colombia. Prior to joining IPA, Prathap was the Associate Director of Research at J-PAL South Asia where he oversaw the execution of numerous randomised controlled trials. Prathap comes from Kakinada, a coastal town in Andhra Pradesh, India. He has a Masters in Public Policy from the University of Michigan and a Bachelors in Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee.

Can technology mitigate the impact of heat on worker productivity?

Exposure to high heat causes productivity losses, with reduction in cognitive function as a key channel. A direct reduction in heat exposure via technologies such as air conditioning is not possible for outdoor tasks. This article presents results from a randomised experiment in Odisha where the use of a digital mode – rather than the traditional pen-and-paper mode – for household surveys helped mitigate some of these heat-induced productivity losses.
