Rana Hasan

Rana Hasan is a Principal Economist in the India Resident Mission of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). He heads its Country Programs and Development Results Group, which works closely with the Government to develop ADB's annual operational programs in India and ensure that they align closely with the priorities and objectives of the country and ADB's own long-term development framework. He previously worked in the Economics Research Department of the ADB and the East-West Center (USA) where he focused on issues relating to inclusive growth, the analysis of poverty and inequality, and the impact of market-oriented economic reforms on labour market outcomes and industrial performance. His research has been published in various journals including the Journal of Development Economics, Review of Economics and Statistics, and World Development. He has also co-edited two volumes on trade and labour related issues. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Maryland and a Masters degree in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi.

Growth, structural change, and poverty reduction: Evidence from India

Poverty reduction in India has been relatively slow even in years of high economic growth. A possible explanation is that growth has mainly been driven by sectors that generate fewer jobs for the poor. This column analyses this explanation and finds that structural change or the reallocation of jobs from low productivity to high productivity sectors, plays a key role in reducing poverty.

The role of cities in ensuring good jobs

In light of India's rapid urbanisation, Rana Hasan looks at various factors which set large cities apart from smaller cities and rural areas: more job opportunities, higher wages, large manufacturing and business sectors, and greater innovation. Although cities already attract workers and firms, he discusses what can be done to make cities even more conducive to job creation. He puts forth policy suggestions and calls for increased investment in transportation and infrastructure and better coordinated economic and urban planning.
