Rishabh Mahendra

Rishabh Mahendra is a Ph.D scholar at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He holds an integrated M.Sc. degree in economics with specialisation in environmental economics from Madras School of Economics (MSE) and Central University of Tamil Nadu.
Prior to joining he has worked as a Young Professional in the Monitoring & Evaluation Unit of the Planning Department, Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi. He has also worked as a Research Assistant in the Department of Humanities & Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee (on a project titled ‘Ramganga River: Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystem Services’) and at MSE, Chennai (on a project titled ‘Distributional Effects of Climate Change Impacts on Indian Agriculture’). He has interned at the Madras Institute of Development Studies, Chennai where he did a mini project on ‘Cost-Benefit Analysis of Treated Water’ under the guidance of Professor L. Venkatachalam and at Centre for Economic Policy and Public Finance, Asian Development Research Institute (ADRI), Patna where he worked on ‘Impact of Agriculture on Environment: A study based on selected Indian States’. He also has two survey experiences as a Field Investigator for the Tamil Nadu Migration Survey in the Thiruvarur district and for a Indian Council of Social Science Research project under Professor Satya Sundar Sethy ( IIT Madras).
He has keen interest in the fields of environmental economics including ecosystem services valuation techniques, climate change impact assessments, politics and other developmental sectors in general.

IGC Panel Discussion: Should electricity be a right?
In September 2019, the International Growth Centre (IGC) hosted a panel discussion in New Delhi to bring together experts to discuss whether a basic minimum quantity of electricity should be available to all and what action could be taken to solve the problem of restricted power supply. The panellists included Robin Burgess (IGC and London School of Economics and Political Science), Anant Sudarshan (University of Chicago), Michael Greenstone (University of Chicago), and R. Lakshmanan (Rural Electrification Corporation Ltd). The discussion was moderated by Rahul Tongia (Brookings India).
