Shivakumar Jolad

Shivakumar Jolad is an associate professor at Flame University. Prior to this he was an assistant professor of physics and social science at Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN). Jolad received his Ph.D. in physics and doctoral minor in demography from Pennsylvania State University. Jolad teaches courses on education policy, demographic methods, and physics courses at graduate and undergraduate level at IITGN. Jolad is one of the co-authors of Ahmedabad District Human Development Report 2016. He has worked on impact evaluation of projects such as Eureka Quality Improvement Program (EQUIP) and Pratham Open School Education (POSE). Apart from academic work, Jolad has worked with several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as PHM (People’s Health Movement)-India, AID (Association for India's Development)-India and Pratham on projects related to public health and elementary education.

Restructuring India’s schooling system
Over the last two decades, students have exited government schools in India due to the poor quality of schools, resulting in the mushrooming of small and tiny private schools that are scattered across the country. In this post, Shivakumar Jolad suggests strategies for restructuring the public schooling system via consolidation of neighbourhood schools and vertical integration across levels of schooling, to enhance efficiency.

Can India reap the demographic dividend in higher education?
India’s population is going through a ‘demographic bulge’, with an increase in the proportion of the working age group and a decrease in that of dependents. In this article, Shivakumar Jolad computes the demographic changes due to fertility decline and attempts to forecast the demand and supply of higher education over the period 2016-2031, across Indian states.
