Sohini Paul

Sohini Paul is a Senior Programme Officer at Population Council, Delhi. Her primary research interests include gender, health, food security and political economy. In her current research project, she seeks to deepening the knowledge of maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) in India through in-depth analyses of various relevant datasets. In the past, she worked on different aspects of food security programme in India, income inequality and health status, women empowerment, labour force participation, political participation, and domestic violence. She has been involved with primary surveys conducted to evaluate different government welfare schemes.

Sohini received her Ph.D. degree from Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), India. She was a post-doctoral fellow at University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada. Prior to joining Population Council, Sohini worked as a fellow at the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), Delhi. She served as a ICCR Chair Professor at Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, Carleton University, Canada.

Maternal health services utilisation: Has the rich-poor gap declined?

Various studies have noted that vast inequalities – economic and socio-demographic – exist in maternal, newborn, and child health outcomes and utilisation of care services. In this post, Sohini Paul explores how inequality in the use of these services changed in the 10 years following the launch of the National Rural Health Mission in 2005. While service utilisation by the poor increased and the rich-poor gap declined in this period, coverage remains low among the poor and inequality persists

Does good governance reduce foodgrain diversion in PDS?

In 2011-12, various states undertook measures to curb leakages of foodgrains from the Public Distribution System. Some of the pioneer states also implemented the National Food Security Act - a rights-based approach to food security - in 2013. Against the backdrop of these reforms, this column analyses whether there is any marked difference in the leakage pattern of foodgrains across states.
