Sonalika Sinha is an Economist (Manager, Research) in the G20 Division of the International Department at Reserve Bank of India. She is an applied economist with a primary focus on impact assessment of policies aimed at the economy at an aggregate level, as well as those aimed at banks, non-banks, and firms. Her recent work has focussed on the impact of Covid-19 on the Indian economy and transmission of macroprudential policies to banks and firms. She has experience in policy research on a wide range of topics including open economy macroeconomics, and analysing policy priorities of emerging market economies.

Economic consequences of Covid-19 lockdowns: Lessons from India’s first wave

As India combats the second wave of Covid-19, the impact on economic activity remains a major concern. Drawing lessons from the first wave in 2020, this article provides an assessment of how containment measures have influenced aggregate economic outcomes. It finds that economic recovery was lower by 9.3% in districts where mobility restrictions were maximum – relative to those with minimal restrictions – and incomes were hit harder than consumption.
