Tanu Kumar is a Ph.D. candidate in political science at the University of California, Berkeley. She studies the determinants of political, economic, and social behaviour of individuals living in developing countries, particularly India. she also has an active interest in statistics and research methodology. Her dissertation project seeks to understand how welfare programmes in developing countries fundamentally change the way in which individuals make demands from the government.

भारत के सभी प्रमुख शहरों में निम्न-मध्यम वर्ग के परिवारों के लिए सब्सिडी वाले घरों की बिक्री से जुड़े कार्यक्रम शुरू किए गए हैं। इस लेख में मुंबई में लॉटरी के माध्यम से कार्यान्वित एक ऐसे कार्यक्रम केविजेताओं के दृष्टिकोण संबंधीप्रभावों का अध्ययन किया गया है। इससे ज्ञात होता है कि अपार्टमेंट जीतने से लाभार्थियों के स्थानीय राजनीति की जानकारी में वृद्धि होती है, और परिवेशी सुधार करने के लिए उनकी राजनीतिक भागीदारी को बढ़ावा देती है। यह उनके बच्चों को शिक्षा प्राप्‍त करने और रोजगार पाने पर भी बड़ा सकारात्मक प्रभाव डालता है।

Household-level effects of affordable housing: Evidence from Mumbai

Programmes involving sale of subsidised houses to lower-middle class households have been spearheaded in all major Indian cities. This article studies the effects of one such programme implemented through lotteries in Mumbai, on winners’ attitudes. It finds that winning an apartment increases beneficiaries’ knowledge about local politics, and their reported political participation to improve neighbourhoods. It also has large positive effects on educational attainment and employment outcomes of their children.
