Tirthatanmoy Das

Tirthatanmoy Das is an Associate Professor in the Economics area at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM Bangalore). He is also a Research Fellow at the IZA Institute of Labor Economics and a Fellow at the Global Labor Organization. Before joining IIM Bangalore, he taught at the University of Central Florida and Temple University. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the State University of New York at Binghamton. His research spans labour economics, econometrics, entrepreneurship, and health economics, focusing on how human capital and skills shape labour market outcomes in both traditional employment and entrepreneurship.

Female labour force participation: Measurement and data quality

Official data revealed a sharp decline in female labour force participation in India between 2004-05 and 2011-12, despite fast economic growth in the country. Examining the measurement of women’s work and data quality issues, this article identifies three explanations for the low observed female labour force participation: inconsistent treatment of non-market work, more women in higher education, and the disproportionate time spent by women on childcare
