Vibhu Tewary is currently an M.B.A. student at Duke University and an independent researcher. He graduated from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in 2012 with a Master’s degree in Development Studies. Vibhu has worked as Research Analyst with Accountability Initiative at Centre for Policy Research in New Delhi between 2012 and 2014. He was part of the quantitative research team and handled the data analysis for the PAISA project. His research work investigates how child level learning outcomes in India are impacted by different factors and inputs. His research interests include education, public finance, statistics and development economics.

Do private tuitions improve learning outcomes?

About a fourth of the students enrolled in elementary schools in rural India attend private tuitions. This column analyses the impact of private tuition on learning outcomes, and finds that it has a large, positive effect on math and language test scores. The impact is greater for those who are more disadvantaged in terms of learning levels, household’s socio-economic status, and education of parents.
