YuJung (Julia) Lee

YuJung (Julia) Lee is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Political Science at Colorado State University. Her research interests include the politics of development and issues in women and politics. As part of her research, she is investigating political obstacles in basic service provision as well as how communities organise themselves to demand these services. Her current work centers on sanitation and health in India. Lee received her Ph.D. in Political Science from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Gender, electoral competition, and sanitation in India
The negative impact of poor sanitation is more pronounced for women than men and therefore, women have a stronger desire to improve sanitation. Analysing district-level data from 15 major Indian states for the period 2006-2011, this article finds that female legislators are more likely than their male counterparts to deliver high-quality latrines – even after considering the role of electoral competition in policy choices of politicians.
