Yuvaraj Galada

Yuvaraj Galada is former Vice President at Government of India-initiated National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), which has been mandated by the Prime Minister to skill 150 million by 2022. Since leaving NSDC in 2011 he has been on sabbatical to explore the question, “How can we Unleash our Forgotten Billion, the poor and poorly educated billion of India?”

If he hadn’t been fired by Satyam Computers in 2009, this journey wouldn't have begun. Prior to this stint he worked for 15 years in the corporate sector across various industries and geographies of the world. He is an engineer with an MBA degree. He is based in Chennai, and currently consults for World Bank.

Unleashing the forgotten billion of India

About 1.7% of India's 400 million workforce learns skills on their own. In this article, Yuvaraj Galada, former Vice President of National Skill Development Corporation, shares experiences from his travels to India's hinterland to meet these ustaads - individuals with extraordinary motivation to self-learn. In his view, supporting and catalysing ustaads to train others can be a rapidly scalable, grassroots approach to closing India's skills gap.
