Mekhala Krishnamurthy

Mekhala Krishnamurthy is Associate Professor of Sociology and Social Anthropology at Ashoka University and Senior Fellow at the Centre for Policy Research, where she directs the State Capacity Initiative. She has trained at Harvard University (A.B. magna cum laude in Social Studies), the University of Cambridge (M.Phil. in Social Anthropology) and at University College London (UCL), where she completed her Ph.D. in Anthropology as a UCL Global Excellence Scholar. She is also a Non-Resident Scholar at the Center for the Advanced Study of India (CASI) at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining Ashoka, she taught in the Department of Sociology, Shiv Nadar University.

कृषि क़ानूनों के इस संगोष्ठी का समापन करते हुए मेखला कृष्णमूर्ति और शौमित्रो चटर्जी इस आलेख में यह तर्क देते हैं कि विनियामक सुधार, अनिवार्य नीतिगत डिजाइन और कार्यान्वयन के लिए एक अधिक व्यापक और प्रासंगिक दृष्टिकोण का, एक महत्वपूर्ण लेकिन सीमित भाग है। इसके अलावा जब बाजार की बात आती है, तो यह सोचना महत्वपूर्ण है कि बाजार विनियमन क्या कर सकता है और क्या नहीं तथा यह समझना कि भारत की कृषि विपणन प्रणाली में मंडियों की क्या भूमिका है?

Wrapping up the Symposium on farm laws, Mekhala Krishnamurthy and Shoumitro Chatterjee contend that regulatory reforms are an important but limited part of what must be both a more comprehensive and contextual approach to policy design and implementation. Moreover, when it comes to markets, it is crucial to think through what market regulation can and cannot do and to understand the role that mandis play in India’s agricultural marketing system.
