Rapid Response on institutional reform of minor irrigation department in conjunction with CEEW
The project was carried out on the request of Principal Secretary, Minor Water Resource Department (MWRD), Government of Bihar on how to reform the MWRD. The study used different parmeters to assess the overall targets and ways to improve participatory irrigation management. Organisational restructuring, better data for strategic management, monitoring performance were some of the important recommendations that were made based on the assessments.

India has an impressive number of environmental regulations – but have they been a success? This column presents evidence that while initiatives such as catalytic converters for cars have reduced air pollution, there has been far less success in tackling water pollution. It argues that regulators will only be effective when they are given enough power and legitimacy.

Strengthening the Institutional Framework for flood and water resources management in Bihar: Developing a strategy for reform'-- Phase 2
Phase 2 of the study attempts to go beyond merely identifying challenges facing Bihar's WRD and spell out reforms and organisational challenges that are required to strengthen the Government of Bihar's ability to address current and future flood management challenges. The findings of the project are highly relevant for strengthening the institutional flood management framework in Bihar. It attempts to present some tangible guidelines and recommendations to the government on how WRD can address their pressing concerns.

Growth in developing countries has improved living standards of millions, but has led to high pollution concentrations and serious public health damages. Market-based environmental regulation can reduce the costs of pollution reduction and thus transform the trade-off between environmental quality and growth.
Seasonal Effects of Water Quality on Maternal and Infant Health in India
This project examines the impact of fertiliser agrichemicals in water on infant and child health using data on water quality combined with data on the health outcomes of infants and children from the Demographic and Health Surveys of India. Because fertilisers are applied at specific times in the growing season, the concentrations of agrichemicals in water vary seasonally and by agricultural region, as some Indian states plant predominantly summer crops while others plant winter crops.
Improving Urban Air Quality in India: Lessons from the Kolkata Clean Air Regulations of 2009
This paper analyses the change in the economic returns of auto-rickshaw drivers in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), roughly one year after they were required to shift to using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in 2009 as per the Kolkata clean air regulations.
