This project exploits the variation in the University of Delhi college admission process to estimate the effects of exposure to high-achieving peers on cognitive attainment using scores on standardised university level examinations; behavioral outcomes such as risk preference, competitiveness, and confidence; and noncognitive outcomes using measures of Big Five personality traits. Using a regression discontinuity design, it finds that the eligibility to enroll in a better quality college (proxied by peer ability) has a positive effect on cognitive outcomes with larger and more consistent effects for females than males. The project also finds that exposure to high achieving peers has an effect on selected personality traits and behavioural outcomes.
